I learned from a friend of mine that is a chemist that there is essentially no difference between brand name and generic shampoos, conditioners, lotions and the like. While knowing this hasn't gotten me to stop buying fancy salon shampoos and conditioners it has gotten me to take advantage of the ones I get at hotels.
While I still use my name brand shampoos most of the time, I do pepper in the hotel bottles once or twice a week. I see no difference in my hair and I save money by making the fancy salon stuff last a little bit longer!
